Successful Startup and Acceptance of the Energy Northwest Plant Vent Radiation Monitoring System – October, 2017

HI-Q Environmental Products Company, Inc. (HI-Q) and VF, a.s. (VF) have completed the Site Acceptance Test for the Columbia Generating Station Plant Vent Radiation Monitoring System.  Energy Northwest has now started a two-month confidence run for the system after which it will become operational.

The Plant Vent Radiation Monitoring System provides the measurement of releases from the plant vent during both normal and post-accident plant operating conditions.  The Regulatory Guide 1.97 compliant design consists of a measurement system for noble gas radioactive isotopes and includes sample heating to eliminate the possibility of condensation in the system.

The replacement of the post-accident particulate and iodine pre-filter is remotely performed, minimizing the exposure of plant workers to high levels of radiation.  The dose rate of the accumulated particulate and iodine activity on the pre-filters is continuously measured.  These design features enhance the ability to maintain exposure to ionizing radiation as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) during post-accident operation.

In addition to the design and manufacturing of the radiation monitoring system, installation, start up support and training were also provided.  HI-Q maintains a stock of critical spare parts for overnight shipment to Columbia located in Richland, Wash.
